"The old man" has to move at the age of 99

Actor Rolf Schimpf has lived in a retirement home in Munich for 13 years. Initially with his wife, who died in 2015. The former "Der Alte" actor is now 99 years old. Nevertheless, he has to vacate his place in the home - allegedly he can no longer afford it.

TV star Rolf Schimpf from the cult crime series "Der Alte" has had to give up his two-room apartment in a posh retirement home in Munich. Around two weeks ago, the 99-year-old moved into cheaper accommodation for financial reasons, his unnamed caregiver confirmed to the German Press Agency.

Schimpf moved into the home with his wife, who has since passed away, in 2010.

The "Bild" newspaper had previously reported on this. According to the newspaper, Schimpf was paying around 5700 euros a month for his accommodation in the "Augustinum" residence, including care services. "He's running out of money. If you don't work for ten years and the high costs are no longer covered by your pension, the money is quickly gone," the actor's carer is quoted as saying. "The current home costs 2,500 euros less than the previous one."

Rolf Schimpf wanted the move, the carer also assured in the "Bild" interview. The former TV star is also being well cared for in his new home. "He has very poor hearing and eyesight, has dementia and needs care."

"We are all horrified"

However, Schimpf's former housemates are incomprehensible about the move, writes Bild, quoting one of the residents: "We are all horrified. And speechless. Now he's in a completely foreign environment where he doesn't know anyone. And nobody knows him. That breaks our hearts. The man is 99 years old. You don't take his familiar home away from him."

According to the "Augustinum" residence, the actor moved in there in 2010 with his wife, who died in 2015. A spokesperson for the facility did not provide any details about the circumstances of Schimpf's departure. In general, however, efforts are being made to find solutions within the home, such as moving to a smaller apartment if someone cannot make ends meet, he explained. An offer that Schimpf or his family apparently did not take up.

Schimpf was born in Berlin on November 14, 1924. After starting out in the theater, he also appeared in front of the camera, for example in the ARD crime series "Tatort" and the ZDF series "SOKO 5113". He became a star through his role as a TV investigator in "Der Alte", in which he went on the hunt for criminals as Chief Inspector Leo Kresse for 20 years from 1986.

Despite his fame from the crime thriller television series "Der Alte," Rolf Schimpf, known as "The Alte" actor, had to downsize his living quarters due to financial constraints. His new accommodation costs approximately 2,500 euros less than his previous high-end retirement home in Munich.

The change in living situation has left Schimpf's former housemates in dismay, with one resident expressing, "We are all horrified. And speechless. Now he's in a completely foreign environment where he doesn't know anyone."
