The number of reported antisemitic incidents in Berlin has risen to a new peak.
After a terrorist attack by the organization Hamas against Israel, there has been an alarming surge in anti-Semitic incidents in Berlin, according to the Research and Information Center on Anti-Semitism (RIAS). The center recorded a whopping 1270 anti-Semitic instances, including online threats, physical assaults, and attacks, which represents a 50% increase compared to the previous year. This is also the highest number of recorded incidents in a single year. The situation took a turn for the worse on October 7, 2023, as anti-Semitism became more prevalent and entrenched in Berlin. Previously, Jewish life had already been limited in the public sphere, but after this date, it became more restricted. Furthermore, the use of anti-Semitic language on the internet has become more brazen and unrestrained.
Before October 7, the number of reported incidents was relatively low, with an average of around two incidents per week. However, starting from this date, there was a sharp rise in the number of reported cases. A staggering 62% of these incidents took place within the last three months of 2023. This is a significant jump from the pre-existing average of two incidents per week.
