The Ibu volcano in Indonesia is at its highest alert level.

The Ibu volcano, situated on Halmahera Island in Indonesia, has reached its highest alert level after spewing a plume of smoke and ash for two consecutive days. Ibu has been notorious for its frequent eruptions, with over 21,000 documented in the last year. Muhammad Wafid, head of the Indonesian Geology Authority, mentioned that they've witnessed a significant escalation in volcanic activities recently.

The situation is concerning, with a spate of earthquakes pointing towards a growing magma pressure underneath this active volcano. With this development, the inclusion of the Ibu volcano in the Southeast Asian island state has now reached level four on Indonesia’s four-level warning system.

The residents and tourists in the area are advised to steer clear of a four to seven kilometer radius surrounding the volcano’s peak and to wear masks to protect themselves from the potential ashfall. Over 700,000 people reside on Halmahera. This populated island falls within Indonesia, a vast country boasting over 17,000 islands and sitting on the 'Pacific Ring of Fire,' which is characterized by frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to the collision of various tectonic plates.

Recently, in April, the Ruang volcano in North Sulawesi erupted a handful of times, compelling thousands to temporarily relocate from the nearby islands as a precaution.
