The higher echelon of German state universities experiences a rise in female representation.
In recent years, the leadership of German state universities has been witnessing a rise in the number of women occupying management positions. As per a report by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), women held 42% of such roles in universities as of December last year. At universities of applied sciences or universities of applied sciences, the number stood at 25%.
A CHE preliminary survey conducted in December 2018 revealed that 24% of university heads were women, with the proportion being 21% at universities of applied sciences and universities of applied sciences. The report further stated, "This indicates that a trend that has been developing for a while is still persisting: University management is increasingly being headed by women."
As per the study, 34 out of the 82 state universities in Germany had a woman at the helm in December 2023, while 25 out of the 101 public universities of applied sciences and universities of applied sciences were run by women. The data was gathered through CHE's online research, which included visits to university websites and direct inquiries made to the presidencies and rectorates.
