What's it all about?

"Tatort" rerun from Vienna - The Filou from the sawmill

At first, the homicide squad investigates without finding a body: Moritz Eisner (Harald Krassnitzer) and Bibi Fellner (Adele Neuhauser) are ordered to Carinthia, where timber entrepreneur Hubert Tribusser is missing. Shortly afterwards, a titanium implant from his shoulder joint is found in the ashes at the sawmill. Eisner and Fellner have to prepare for a long stay in the wasteland. They are not welcome. Many of the locals have a motive, because the dead man has taken everything he wanted: other people's money - and other men's wives.

Why is this "crime scene" worthwhile?

The Viennese investigators are supported in their work by the village policeman Alois Feining (Karl Fischer), an old friend of Eisner. The two once shared a deep male friendship, which they now rekindle. At night, they sing Rolling Stones songs together and reminisce about old times. There's something touching about that. Meanwhile, Bibi Fellner is much more productive, using her empathy to help solve the case.

What is disturbing?

Family quarrels, marital affairs, hearty fights and a pastoral session under the tree - this "Tatort" (script: Agnes Pluch; director: Nikolaus Leytner) leaves out hardly a cliché that city dwellers have of country life.

The detectives?

The relationship between the two detectives suffers because Eisner spends so much time with his old buddy. But when the two make the journey home to Vienna at the end, they both realize that they don't have many people in their lives they can rely on. They have each other. That's no small thing.

Switch on or switch off?

If you get the wanderlust, you should switch on. The criminal case itself is nothing more than a frame for the idyllic images of Carinthia.

The "Tatort" episode "Baum fällt" was first broadcast on November 24, 2019. ARD will repeat the case on Friday, December 8, at 10.20 pm.
