The Federal Council endorses a contentious new law to combat climate change.
The Swiss Federal Council greenlighted the new Climate Protection Act on Friday, bringing an end to legal binding objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, the proposed act by the traffic light coalition doesn't alter the emission targets.
Rather than focusing on past performance, future updates will be necessary if the emission objectives aren't met for two consecutive years. This elminates the need for prompt sector-specific action plans, such as those in the transport sector.
In contrast to earlier regulations, the focus will shift from analysis to prediction, targeting accomplishment by 2030 or 2040 at the latest. Environmental organizations have heavily criticized the updated law, regarding it as a dilution of the previous regulations.
