Criminal proceedings against Alec Baldwin have been discontinued - The family of Halyna Hutchins continues to fight

Lawyer for Halyna Hutchins' family (1979-2021) announced that they will continue to fight for justice. She stated to US media outlets, that the dismissal of the manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin (66) "only reinforces our determination to seek justice in the civil lawsuit we have filed against him in Santa Fe, New Mexico."

Gloria Allred (83) stated to "CBS News" openly near the courthouse in Santa Fe, after Baldwin's case was dismissed there by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer: "This only strengthens our resolve in the civil complaint we have filed against him in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to seek justice." Allred represents the parents and sister of the deceased cinematographer.

Halyna Hutchins was fatally injured by a bullet from a firearm held by Baldwin on the set of the film "Rust" in October 2021. The responsible armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed (27) was already sentenced to 18 months in prison in April for involuntary manslaughter. It is still unclear why the weapon was loaded with live ammunition.

Family will "fight to the end"

Lawyer Gloria Allred further stated that the news of the dismissed criminal case against Baldwin was "devastating for the family," who grieve for Halyna every day, and that they were "determined" to "fight to the end" in the civil lawsuit against Baldwin and the entire "Rust" production.

Allred also stated that she intended to hold Baldwin and the entire "Rust" production accountable in the civil lawsuit, noting that this decision in the criminal case would not affect it.

Allred does not represent Hutchins' husband Matthew Hutchins, who filed a lawsuit in 2022 but later dropped it. He reportedly told media outlets that he believed his wife's death was an "unfortunate accident."

The case against Alec Baldwin was dismissed due to a procedural error. The judge ruled on Friday (12 July) that the prosecution had improperly withheld evidence from Baldwin's defense. This left only one possible outcome: the immediate dismissal of the case. Baldwin cannot be held responsible for the fatal shot in any new criminal proceedings as a result. Civil lawsuits, however, are excluded from this.
