Renowned rapper Fatman Scoop has departed at the age of 53, following a collapse onstage during a concert. "With tremendous sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the demise of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop," his family shared in a statement. His management verified the incident to the German Press Agency.

He was a beacon of joy in our lives, offering consistent support, indomitable resilience, and courage, according to the family statement. "Fatman Scoop was more than an exceptional performer; he was a father, brother, uncle, and cherished friend." In an Instagram post, his management commemorated his "legendary voice, contagious energy, and captivating personality" that left an enduring impact on the industry.

The artist fell ill onstage in Connecticut on a Friday evening, with the precise reason behind the incident still undisclosed. Only a few days prior, he was reported to be in great health and high spirits, as per his management's communication to the German Press Agency. Prior to the performance, he consumed an energy drink, an unusual practice for him.

Key figure in the '90s New York hip-hop scene

Fatman Scoop was recognized as a vital figure in the hip-hop scene of the 1990s. He rose to fame through his contributions to hits such as Missy Elliott's Grammy-winning "Lose Control" and Mariah Carey's "It's Like That." His song "Be Faithful" peaked at top chart positions in the UK and Ireland. Lately, Fatman Scoop was a regular guest on television shows.

Elliott expressed her condolences on X, noting that Fatman Scoop's voice and energy had inspired dance and happiness for over two decades. Ciara, a collaborator on "Lose Control," described him as "one of the most exceptional voices in hip-hop." "I'm so fortunate to have witnessed your greatness," she wrote on Instagram.

Other hip-hop icons also paid tribute on social media. "I'm at a loss for words," producer Timbaland said on Instagram. Snoop Dogg posted a crying emoji. Questlove thanked Fatman Scoop "for embodying what hip-hop truly means: forgetting your troubles, living in the present, and inviting joy."

Despite his health challenge onstage, Fatman Scoop's impact on the music industry was undeniable, as evidenced by the outpouring of tributes from his peers.
