Ilkay Gündogan, age 33, has decided to no longer represent Germany in football at a national level. This announcement came on a Monday evening, following a period of contemplation. Gündogan assumed the role of captain in September 2023, under then-coach Hansi Flick, and maintained this status during Julian Nagelsmann's tenure at this year's home European Championship – a significant achievement in his 13-year national team career.

Leading the German team during the home European Championship had been a "major accomplishment" for Gündogan. "We eventually managed to restore the nation's pride after so many years, and I'm thrilled that I played a part in this," he said. Despite considering stepping down before the tournament, the continuous demands of both club and national football had begun to take its toll on him, leaving him feeling physically and mentally fatigued.

Gündogan reflected on his 82 international matches played for his native country, a number he had never dared to imagine reaching back when he started his career with the A national team in 2011. He expressed his intention to remain a passionate supporter of the German team and hoped that the team's positive trajectory would continue. Gündogan speculated that Germany might stand a strong chance of becoming one of the "leading title contenders" at the 2026 World Cup, given their exceptional coach, powerful squad, and strong camaraderie. "We have an extraordinary coach, a powerful team, and a fantastic team spirit," he concluded, before expressing his gratitude to everyone who had supported him along the way. "It was an honor! Thank you, Germany!"

Ilkay Gündogan made his debut with the A national team in an October 2011 Euro qualifier against Belgium. Over the course of 82 international games, he captained the team in 19 matches and scored 19 goals as a midfielder. The future of his career with his club remains unclear. In 2023, Gündogan transferred from Manchester City to FC Barcelona after seven years. His contract expires in June 2025.

Reactions from the DFB coach and teammates

Julian Nagelsmann, the DFB coach, lauded Gündogan as a "remarkable captain." "I was incredibly proud to have Gündogan as our captain. He often outshone others, but more often, he allowed his teammates to shine in the national team. His impactful presence will be sorely missed, both in terms of his skills and innovative ideas," Nagelsmann commented. Despite wanting to continue collaborating with Gündogan, he respected his decision.

Gündogan's teammates also voiced their sentiments following his announcement. National player Robin Koch commented, "An honor, Captain!" Robert Andrich shared a photo on Instagram and wrote, "Thanks, captain!"

Midfielder Jamal Musiala, a promising DFB player, posted on Instagram, "Thank you for everything, Capitano! It was an honor." Defender Antonio Rüdiger simply stated, "Thanks for everything, Gündo."

Bastian Schweinsteiger, a former national team player, extended "Congratulations on your career with the DFB team!" Entrepreneur Carsten Maschmeyer praised Gündogan in an Instagram post as a "Midfield Maestro," commending his composure, wisdom, and leadership skills that guided the German team through challenging times. He consistently demonstrated determination and perseverance.

The German Football Association (DFB) expressed their appreciation for Ilkay Gündogan's leadership, with DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann stating, "The Commission will miss Gündogan's impactful presence and innovative ideas." Gündogan's teammate Robert Lewandowski, also a member of The Commission, added his sentiments, expressing, "It was a pleasure serving alongside Gündogan, and I respect his decision to step down."
