The Berlinale gets a new boss

Not everyone is thrilled that the director of the Berlin Film Festival is to change. But the die is cast: The previous management duo, Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek, will be stepping down and making way for the US-American Tricia Tuttle at the top of the Berlinale.

Tricia Tuttle will head the Berlinale in the future. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth presented the former head of the London Film Festival BFI (British Film Institute) in Berlin as the new director of the film festival. The US-American is set to take over the festival in April 2024.

Claudia Roth (left) certainly seems satisfied.

Previously, the supervisory board of the Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin (KBB), which is responsible for the Berlinale, had discussed the appointment under the chairmanship of the Green politician. Roth announced a few months ago that the Berlinale would only be headed by one person in future. Most recently, Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek held the position as a management duo.

Chatrian drew the consequences of Roth's statement by announcing that he would leave the festival after the 2024 edition. Rissenbeek had already announced her departure beforehand. Both officially took up their posts in June 2019. For the first time in the history of the film festival, they had taken over as dual leadership, with Chatrian as artistic director and Rissenbeek as managing director.

Roth now wants to uphold the international significance of the film festival. She wants the Berlinale to play in the same league as Cannes, Venice or Toronto.

A commission chaired by Roth was looking for a suitable person to succeed him. Among those involved were director and Oscar winner Edward Berger ("Nothing New in the West"), the managing director of the German Film Academy Anne Leppin, actress Sara Fazilat and producer Roman Paul.

Numerous filmmakers had criticized Roth in connection with the planned change of leadership. The Berlinale is one of the major film festivals alongside Cannes and Venice. The next edition is scheduled to take place from February 15 to 25, 2024.
