Winona Ryder, now 52, has once again discussed how her Hollywood career took a significant hit following her shoplifting arrest back in 2001. In an interview with Esquire magazine, she admitted, "It had some major impacts."

"I Simply Disengaged"

When queried about how she dealt with the ordeal, she replied, "I simply disengaged." Ryder was arrested and charged with stealing merchandise worth around $5,500 from a store in Beverly Hills, California. Following her conviction in 2002 for felony grand theft and shoplifting, she was handed a three-year probationary sentence, a fine, and was required to perform community service. She then chose to step away from acting and relocated from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Initially, she thought she had simply made an innocent mistake, mainly involving "paperwork." But when she discovered that she might face jail time, she was utterly stunned. "I was like, 'What's this?'" she remembered.

Disconcerted by the Hostile Online Environment

During her sabbatical from the industry, Ryder was taken aback by the aggressive online environment towards young actresses. She felt that there was a perceptible change in the industry's and society's attitudes towards what was deemed acceptable and what was commended. In a 2016 interview with Net-A-Porter, she had likewise discussed her Hollywood break, mentioning that it was precisely what she needed at the time. "Mentally, I must have been at a point where I just had to stop," she had stated. She hadn't committed a heinous crime, but it provided her with the time she desperately required to return to San Francisco and pursue other interests.

Winona Ryder made her comeback to the silver screen with supporting roles in 2006. Her latest film "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is currently playing in theaters. It had its worldwide premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 28, 2023.
