Angelique Kerber - Tennis pros end career after Olympics
Angelique Kerber (36) will soon retire from her career as a tennis player. She announced this on Instagram. The Olympics in Paris will be her last event, but she wants to enjoy her last tournament properly before that.
Angelique Kerber will never forget Olympics 2024
Kerber made her comeback at the end of 2023 after a baby break. However, her career is coming to an end now. "The finish line," writes the athlete on the social media platform alongside a picture of her sitting on the court with a tennis racket. She announces without further ado: "Before the Olympics begin, I can already say that I will never forget Paris 2024, because it will be my last professional tournament as a tennis player." Though this is the right decision, she admits it won't feel right afterwards. "Just because I love the sport from the bottom of my heart and am grateful for the memories and opportunities it has given me."
Kerber, who won the Australian Open, US Open, and Wimbledon in 2016 and 2018 respectively, looks back on her Olympic appearances in the post. The Olympic Games, at which she participated, represented "different chapters of my tennis career: the rise, the peak... and now the finish line."
Enjoying Olympics 2024 to the fullest
Olympics 2012 in London helped her overcome doubts and boost her self-confidence after she had almost given up on tennis and her childhood dreams the year before. Four years later, she won a silver medal in Rio and Paris 2024 is now set to mark "the finish line of the most incredible journey I have ever dreamed of as a child, holding a tennis racket in my hand." There is still much to say, and she wants to thank many people, but she will do that after her last match. For now, Kerber wants to take some time for herself to "savor every single second of this final episode on the court."
Angelique Kerber became a mother for the first time in February 2023. She welcomed her daughter Liana into the world. Kerber had previously withdrawn from the US Open in August 2022 "for the best possible reason." She also made the announcement on Instagram that she was pregnant.
Angelique Kerber is eager to make the most of her final tournament at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, as she expressed on Instagram. Despite retiring from tennis after Paris, Kerber plans to cherish every moment of her last professional tournament. Kerber's career saw her triumphant at the Australian Open, US Open, and Wimbledon in 2016 and 2018. The Olympic Games have played significant roles in her journey, with London 2012 helping her regain confidence and Rio 2016 earning her a silver medal. Shortly before her retirement, Kerber gave birth to her daughter Liana in February 2023 and announced her pregnancy on Instagram, as well.
