Novak Djokovic - Tennis hero sees Serbia out of European Championships
Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis superstar (37), watched the decisive EM group match of his Serbian team against Denmark in Munich on Tuesday evening. Noteworthy: The 24-time Grand Slam winner is currently recovering from a knee surgery in London and trained on the grass of Wimbledon in the morning to prepare for his comeback. A few hours later, he took his place in the Serbian national team stand, wearing the number 1.
He appeared cheerful and open at first and took numerous selfies with fans who immediately recognized him. The national hero also posted a picture of himself and some Serbian fans on his Instagram, captioned "Idemo!" which translates to "Let's go!" in German. Surprisingly, his Instagram snapshot showed him still wearing a suit and apparently some moments before the match start. However, he later put on a Serbian jersey over his shirt and set aside the elegant jacket.
Novak Djokovic is currently training for his comeback at Wimbledon
Djokovic is currently working on his return to the court. A decision on whether he will actually start at the upcoming prestigious grass-court tournament in Wimbledon, which begins next week, has not been made yet. At the last major tournament, the French Open in Paris, the current world number 2 had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury before his quarterfinal match, as his knee was causing too much pain after a meniscus tear. A few days later, he underwent surgery to quickly get back into the action.
The short trip to Munich did not really pay off for the tennis star. He saw an uninspired Serbian national team that could not get past a 0:0 draw against Denmark. A win was necessary for progression. So, the Serbians bid farewell to the Europa Championship in Germany on Tuesday evening. Their two points from three games meant a disappointing fourth place in Group C and elimination from the EM.
