School in Berlin - Teenagers instigate brawl - almost 50 pupils and teachers injured by pepper spray
During an altercation at a Berlin school, 49 pupils and teachers were injured by pepper spray. The principal, who wanted to separate the quarrelling pupils, was taken to hospital with a broken hand, as the Berlin police announced on Tuesday. Several investigations into dangerous and simple assault have been initiated.
On Monday, several 14 and 15-year-old teenagers clashed at the secondary school in Gropiusstadt, a district of Neukölln. As a result, those involved sprayed pepper spray, after which an uninvolved 15-year-old started a fight.
Brother of a pupil threatens Berlin police officers
A 38-year-old teacher and a 30-year-old female teacher were also attacked and sprayed with irritant gas during an attempt at mediation. The 52-year-old principal, who tried to separate the pupils, was pushed and suffered a fracture as a result.
Only the crews of several police patrols were initially able to calm the situation. However, the 21-year-old brother of one of the pupils involved in the fight then attacked two officers and punched one of them in the face.
The man, who continued to threaten the police officers, was overpowered and provisionally arrested. He was released after undergoing identification treatment. The 21-year-old now faces charges of assaulting law enforcement officers, threatening and insulting. The cause of the altercation was unclear.

In response to the brawl at the secondary school in Gropiusstadt, a 15-year-old teen who was not involved initially used pepper spray during the fight. After the altercation, the brawl spread to Newkölln, where the brother of one of the pupils sprayed pepper spray and instigated a brawl against Berlin police officers.
