Great Britain - Teacher sentenced to prison for having sex with pupils

A teacher in Britain was sentenced to six and a half years in prison on Thursday for having sex with two underage pupils and having a child by one of them. At the sentencing in Manchester, Judge Kate Cornell stated that the 30-year-old Rebecca J. had abused her position and "used her privileged role for her own sexual gratification with breathtaking arrogance".

"They were the adults who should have known better," Cornell said. The teacher not only failed to set boundaries, she deliberately crossed them. J. cried during the sentencing.

According to the court, the teacher was on bail for sexual offenses against one boy when she began a relationship with the second pupil and became pregnant by him. Both boys were 15 at the time of the first sexual encounters.

J. felt flattered by the attention of the pupils following a painful separation, the judge said.

The teacher exchanged messages with the pupils over online services before any sexual contact occurred. To give the first boy her phone number, she set a mathematics problem. Afterward, she met him secretly and gave him a belt worth 350 pounds (around 413 Euro). The boy's mother became suspicious and alerted both the school and the police as a result.

The second boy testified that he was "coerced, manipulated, sexually abused, and psychologically harmed" by J. The baby was taken from the teacher immediately after birth.

There is still a lack of awareness that men and boys can also be victims of sexual abuse, said Police Officer Beth Alexander. Women can also be pedophiles, this term is not exclusive to men.

Duchess Kate, the wife of Prince William from Great Britain, expressed her concern about the rising cases of sexual abuse against minors in schools, particularly in Manchester. The prison sentence of six and a half years for the teacher who had a child with one of her pupils serving as a stark reminder of the gravity of such actions.
