Taylor Swift is "Person of the Year" 2023

When it comes to her music, concerts and awards, there is hardly a record that Taylor Swift has not yet broken. Now she can also claim to be on a par with people like Barack Obama, Angela Merkel and Elon Musk. Time magazine named her "Person of the Year" for 2023.

Since 1927, "Time" magazine has awarded the title of "Person of the Year" every year: the "Person of the Year" is chosen as the person who, in the opinion of the editorial team, has significantly changed or moved the world in the respective year.

In previous years, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (2022), tech entrepreneur Elon Musk (2021) and US President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris (2020) have had the honor of holding the title. Even earlier, however, the then US Presidents Barack Obama (2012) and Donald Trump (2016), their Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin (2007), the then German Chancellor Angela Merkel (2015) and climate activist Greta Thunberg (2019) were also honored as "Person of the Year".

This year, "Time" has chosen a musician who currently seems to be at the absolute peak of her career: Taylor Swift is the "Person of the Year" 2023, as the magazine officially announced with a long portrait including an interview with the mega-star.

The "Taylor effect"

In the accompanying Time article, the author names her as a pop star in the same breath as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Madonna, and as a songwriter with Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell. As a businesswoman, Swift has also built up "an empire which, according to some estimates, is worth over 1 billion dollars".

Swift herself says in the interview that at the age of 33, it feels like the breakthrough of her career. "And for the first time in my life, I was mentally strong enough to handle what came with it."

Swift has become "the most important person in the world" this year, according to Time magazine. Her "Eras Tour" is expected to be the biggest tour of all time and the first ever to bring in more than a billion dollars. The "Taylor effect" cannot be overlooked: Her concerts have created a "small economic boom" in the cities she has visited, as concertgoers have stormed hotels and restaurants.

The effect that the singer has had on society can also be seen in seemingly small things, the author continues. For example, friendship bracelets have become a popular accessory just because of a small line in one of her songs, which has led to a 500 percent increase in sales in craft stores. Since Taylor Swift started dating football star Travis Kelce, the number of spectators at his team Kansas City Chiefs' games has risen massively. Not to mention the fact that she is breaking chart records with the re-release of her old albums, which she had previously set herself.

In an interview with "Time" magazine, Swift also talks openly about her current relationship: "It all started when Travis got on my nerves in a very endearing way on his podcast, which I thought was pretty damn cool," she reports. After that, they started spending time together. "So we had a lot of time where nobody knew anything, which I'm really grateful for because it allowed us to get to know each other. When I went to that first game, we were already a couple." She had nothing to hide, Swift said. "We're just proud of each other."

Almost at the same time as "Time" magazine announced its "Person of the Year", two other publications also published rankings in which Swift plays an important role. People magazine named the singer the "most fascinating person of the year". Forbes magazine, in turn, published its list of the "100 most influential women" in the world. German EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen came in first place. However, Swift is the first woman from show business in fifth place behind ECB President Christine Lagarde, US Vice President Harris and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Taylor Swift's recent recognition as "Person of the Year" 2023 by "Time" magazine underscores her significant impact on the entertainment industry, particularly in the realm of pop music. Her accomplishments in music, concerts, and awards have placed her on par with influential figures such as Barack Obama and Angela Merkel.

The reversal of fortune for craft stores and Kansas City Chiefs football games serve as tangible evidence of the "Taylor effect," demonstrating the widespread influence Taylor Swift exerts on contemporary culture.
