Sylvester Stallone gets emotional

Sunday was "Rocky Day". Where? In Philadelphia, of course. In the US city where the "Rocky" films are set, the boxing movie character will be celebrated every year from now on. It goes without saying that "Rocky" creator Sylvester Stallone himself will be attending the premiere of the event.

Sylvester Stallone is being given a very special honor: his legendary film character Rocky Balboa now has his own memorial day. The first "Rocky Day" was celebrated on Sunday in Philadelphia, the setting of the boxing films. Exactly 47 years earlier, on December 3, 1976, "Rocky", the original film in the series, which now has eight sequels and spin-offs, was released in American cinemas.

Sylvester Stallone himself was present at the launch of the new holiday. Together with his wife Jennifer Flavin, the native New Yorker returned to Philadelphia, where he grew up. The Hollywood star was presented with the key to the city. Stallone also cut the ribbon to open a "Rocky" store selling merchandise from the film series.

Finally, Stallone gave a speech next to the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The 72 steps became world-famous through "Rocky" - the underdog boxer climbs them during his training for the upcoming fight against champion Apollo Creed. According to US media reports, Stallone said that the famous staircase scene not only changed "Rocky's" life, but also his own. "When you reach the top, you feel inspired, you feel special, hopeful, happy and most of all proud of yourself," said the 77-year-old.

"Never give up"

"Life is a struggle," Stallone continued. Of life's battles, you will "win some and lose many", the actor added. "But the real victory is never giving up and going to extremes for yourself and the ones you love. Never give up."

In a way, the story of "Rocky Balboa" also mirrors that of Sylvester Stallone. When he wrote the screenplay about the underclass boxer who unexpectedly gets the chance of a title fight, he was still a less successful actor. Stallone sold his script for less than it was worth, but with the option of playing the leading role himself.

"Rocky" became a surprise hit that won three Oscars. Stallone was nominated as the lead actor and screenwriter. This was followed by five sequels and, with "Creed", a successful spin-off series.
