Survey: Scholz leads Merz in popularity for chancellor in both Eastern and Western regions
In a recent Forsa survey, it was found that more people would directly elect Chancellor Olaf Scholz over CDU leader Friedrich Merz. The RTL/ntv Trendbarometer revealed that 33% of respondents would opt for Scholz, while 31% would go for Merz.
Scholz would lead in both Eastern and Western regions, with 30% and 34% support respectively. On the other hand, Merz would receive 28% and 32% support in these regions. Interestingly, more men would choose Merz, while women lean towards Scholz.
The Union remains in the lead this week, with a small drop of 2 percentage points to reach 30%. The SPD maintains its position at 16%, the AfD at 15%, the Greens at 13%, the FDP at 6%, the BSW/Sahra Wagenknecht alliance at 6%, and all other parties combining for 14%.

The Forsa survey indicated that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has a higher preference than CDU leader Friedrich Merz in both the Eastern and Western regions for the position of Chancellor. Despite Merz having more male supporters, Scholz still garners more support from women in the survey. The survey results show that Scholz leads Merz in popularity for the chancellorship in the West with 34% support, while Merz gets 32%. In contrast, Scholz leads in the East with 30% support, compared to Merz's 28%.
