Donald Trump - Supreme Court confirms partial immunity
Former US President Donald Trump (78) has achieved a partial victory at the Supreme Court, the highest court in the country. The Supreme Court ruled with six to three votes that former presidents cannot be expected to be prosecuted for official government actions and possess immunity. However, this does not apply to unofficial actions.
Trump is not above the law
"The President is not immune for his unofficial actions, and not everything the President does is official," the Supreme Court stated further. At the same time, it was also determined: "The President is not above the law." The next steps are currently unclear, as a lower instance is now supposed to decide how the judgment in the Trump case applies.
Donald Trump, who wants to be the US President again in the upcoming election, is being accused of election fraud in Washington D.C. Supporters of the then defeated but still incumbent President had stormed the Capitol, the seat of the US government, on January 6, 2021. Trump had previously attempted to overturn the election results. A possible trial start could be significantly delayed due to the Supreme Court's decision. It is unclear whether a start is still possible before the presidential election in November.
Sentencing in the Hush Money Case
There is also an ongoing proceeding against Trump in the US state of Georgia regarding an alleged electoral interference. However, in the hush money process involving porn star Stormy Daniels (45) and the former President in New York, a final decision is expected before the election.
After a guilty verdict in all 34 charges in May, the sentencing for July 11 is expected for the Strafmaß. Theoretically, Trump, the first former US President in history to be convicted of a crime, could face several years in prison. However, it is considered likely that he will avoid prison time with a fine and/or probation.
- Despite the Supreme Court's ruling granting him immunity for official government actions, former US President Donald Trump still faces legal scrutiny in other cases.
