Study Reveals Public Support for Increased Defense Budget and Mandatory Military Service
The recent ZDF Politbarometer findings reveal that a substantial portion of Germans (67%) support increasing budget allocations for the Bundeswehr. In contrast, only 23% object to this idea. However, a significant majority of 56% are against loosening the debt restriction, allowing the government to accumulate more debt. Interestingly, the majority of SPD, Green, and Left Party supporters endorse this notion.
The CDU's proposal for mandatory service by young people, which was also proposed by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has garnered significant backing. A staggering 77% of respondents, backed by majorities across all political parties, believe that either serving in the military or the social sector for a year is a good idea. On the other hand, only 20% disagree with the concept.

The mandatory military service proposal, which includes serving in the German Armed Forces or the social sector, requires substantial investment in equipment. The survey reveals that a majority of Germans believe additional funding for the German Armed Forces is necessary, but only the majority of SPD, Green, and Left Party supporters support accumulating more debt for this purpose. Despite the majority support for compulsory service, many Germans are reluctant to pay more money towards this initiative.
