Competition - Strong German presence at the 77th Locarno Film Festival

At this year's Locarno Film Festival in August, five German or German-engaged contributions are competing for the Golden Leopard. The festival announced that 17 films from around the world will start in the international competition for the main prize.

The 77th International Film Festival takes place from August 7-17 in the well-known Swiss holiday resort on Lago Maggiore. German filmmakers are represented there in domestic, international, and co-productions in various sections.

225 Short, Feature and Documentary films

For example, Maren Eggert and Luise Heyer can be seen in "Der Spatz im Kamin" by Swiss director Ramon Zürcher, and Helena Zengel in "Transamazonia" by German director Pia Marais. The Munich-born director Christoph Hochhäusler, who recently had success with the Thriller "Bis ans Ende der Nacht" awarded at the Berlinale 2023, presents the gangster drama "Der Tod wird kommen".

In the eleven days of the festival, besides Cannes, Berlin and Venice, the most significant European film festival will show 225 Short, Feature and Documentary films. Maja Hoffmann acts for the first time as President of the Film Festival. She named her vision for 2024 during the program presentation in Zurich: "A Home for Transformative Thinking". That means: She sees the Festival as a school for democratic, progressive worldviews.
