Strengthened federal law enforcement efforts are being implemented for the European Championships to reinforce border security.
During the upcoming European Football Championship in Germany, there will be an influx of international fans. To prevent criminals from entering the country, tighter border security measures are being put in place. Along with terrorists, hooligans, and traveling criminals like pickpockets, already deported migrants are also being monitored by the Federal Police. Border checks will even be conducted in areas where they typically don't happen, such as the green border with neighboring countries.
The Federal Police has announced that they will activate their security system specifically for the football championship. Their efforts will include conducting border checks at all points across Germany. The "Bild" newspaper reports that five groups are being targeted: terrorists, hooligans, travel criminals, deported migrants, and others. They're even expanding checks to regions where they normally wouldn't, like the green border with nearby countries.
The increase in border control is happening, but it's still undetermined when exactly these measures will kick in. Media reports state that 22,000 federal police officers will be on duty every day, monitoring airports, train stations, stadiums, and public viewing areas. There will also be 2,500 special police units, 50 mobile surveillance units, 45 alarm trains, and 45 trains carrying trainee police officers. The leave ban for the Federal Police is effective during the entire duration of the European Championship (June 14 to July 14).
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has stated that the security forces are doing everything they can to protect against all possible threats. She outlined her concerns as ranging from the risk of Islamic terrorism to hooligans and violent criminals, cyber attacks, and more. Faeser said that the police presence will be high at all venues where large numbers of people gather.
The European Football Championship in Germany will have a huge influx of foreign fans, with approximately 2.7 million tickets sold during various sales phases. The number of tickets sold, however, exceeded the quota significantly. Tickets for German games in the knockout phase are only available after the group stage has concluded. Each association will have 10,000 tickets for group stage games, 6,000 tickets for the round of 16 and quarterfinals, 7,000 tickets for the semifinals, and 10,000 tickets for the final.
