The "Freie Presse" first reported on Eberhard Hertel's death. According to reports, Mayor Mario Horn of Hertel's hometown Oelsnitz announced that the musician had passed away. The city flag before the town hall of Oelsnitz was lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect.
Eberhard Hertel began his music career in his late 30s. In 1976, he appeared on the East German TV show "Heitere Premiere" with a folk medley and won the audience's adoration. He was a regular on the folk music show "Oberhofer Bauernmarkt" and was a familiar face and voice there.
In 1985, he appeared on the show with his then six-year-old daughter Stefanie Hertel. The start of her career - for which he later took a step back. Throughout the years, father and daughter performed together on stage, most recently in December 2023 for a Christmas tour.
