Spain's Prime Minister deems a Palestinian state vital for achieving peace.
Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, views the acknowledgment of a Palestinian state as a critical step towards resolving the ongoing Middle East conflict. He discussed this during a cabinet meeting, stating it as an "essential prerequisite" for attaining peace. According to him, this is the only way to achieve a two-state solution, which everyone acknowledges as the only path to a peaceful future.
On Tuesday, Spain, Ireland, and Norway declared their official recognition of a Palestinian state. Sanchez emphasized that this action demonstrates their "strong opposition to Hamas," a group against a two-state solution. He made it clear that he holds no ill-will towards Israel or anyone else.
This decision comes amidst the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It marks a shift from the traditional stance of Western countries, who have until now only recognized a Palestinian state after reaching a peace agreement with Israel.
Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, heavily criticized Sanchez, denouncing him as a "complicit accomplice inciting a genocide against the Jews." On the online platform X, Katz made a parallel between Sanchez, Yolanda Díaz (the second Vice President of Spain), Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (the spiritual leader of Iran), and Yahya Sinwar (the Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip), pointing out that Díaz advocated for a "free Palestinian state from the river to the sea" - a phrase referring to the Jordan and Mediterranean, and is often interpreted as a call for the eradication of Israel.
