Spain Denies Israeli Weapon-Carrying Ship Entry, Foreign Minister Vows Future Restrictions

The Spanish government has prevented a ship believed to be carrying weapons for Israel from docking at the port of Cartagena. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares warned that any vessel transporting weapons to Israel would no longer be allowed to stop at Spanish ports.

Irene Montero from the leftist party Podemos revealed that this was the first time a Spanish port had been denied to a ship transporting arms to Israel. Albares added that this decision was made to strictly prohibit any future visits by military ships heading to Israel.

Podemos politician Javier Sanchez Serna, who represents Murcia in the Chamber of Deputies, attempted to obtain approval from Transport Minister Oscar Puente to let the ship, "Borkum", enter the port for more thorough examination but was unsuccessful.

Spain has emerged as one of the most vocal opponents in Europe of Israel's activities in the Gaza Strip, suspending its arms deals with the country. The government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has also proclaimed recognition of a Palestinian state and aims to sway other European nations as well.

The Gaza Strip conflict erupted following a major assault by Hamas on Israel on October 7. Israeli information estimates that about 1170 people met their deaths, with approximately 250 kidnappings. In response, Israel initiated considerable military activity within the Gaza Strip. The Hamas-administered Ministry of Health, whose figures cannot be independently verified, reports more than 35,200 fatalities.
