Asia - South Korea complains: North Korea sends Mull-Balloons over the border again

North Korea has reportedly sent multiple balloons over the heavily militarized border between the two countries towards South Korea, according to South Korea's military authorities. The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul announced through the official news agency Yonhap on Sunday that the balloons were heading towards the border province of Gyeonggi. The population was urged not to touch the balloons but instead report them to the police. Since late May, North Korea has already sent over 1,000 balloons filled with waste and sometimes with feces towards South Korea.

South Korea turns loudspeakers towards North Korea again

The South Korean government had once again resorted to psychological warfare methods and resumed broadcasting propaganda over loudspeakers along the border. The North Korean leadership considers such actions a serious provocation.

Facing increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, South Korea's government recently decided to suspend the military agreement with North Korea from 2018 on confidence-building measures along the border. This decision effectively paved the way for the resumption of military drills near the Military Demarcation Line.

After a period of de-escalation, the conflict on the Korean Peninsula has gained significant intensity in recent history. Since early 2022, North Korea has been testing nuclear-capable missiles and other weapons at an accelerated pace. South Korea and the USA have meanwhile strengthened their military cooperation.

  1. Upon discovering a reported balloon drifting towards their territory, the police in South Korea have urged the public to report any findings without attempting to approach it.
  2. The resumption of propaganda broadcasts by South Korea using loudspeakers along the border has been met with criticism from North Korea, who viewed it as a provocation.
  3. Yonhap News Agency reported that the latest round of balloon incidents involving waste and feces originated from North Korea, occurring frequently since last May.
  4. The escalation of warfare tactics, including nuclear-capable missile tests by North Korea, has led to intensified military cooperation between South Korea and the USA in recent Asian history.
