The US actress Suzanne Shepherd has died. This was confirmed by her granddaughter Isabelle to the US edition of the tabloid newspaper "The Sun". She did not give a cause of death. The family said they would not provide any further information on the circumstances. Shepherd was 89 years old. She is survived by her daughter Kate Shepherd, an artist from New York City.

Shepherd became known primarily through the Martin Scorsese classic "Goodfellas" from 1990, where she played the mother of the main character Karen Hill. She then took on the leading role of Mary DeAngelis, Carmela Soprano's mother, in the mafia series "The Sopranos" from 2000 to 2007. Shepherd played one of her last roles in the 2018 comedy "The Week Of", starring alongside Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Steve Buscemi. She has also appeared in numerous TV productions such as "Law & Order", "Third Watch" and "Gravity".

In addition to her film and television career, Shepherd was also active as a theater actress and director. She also made a name for herself as an acting teacher and ran her own studio in New York City for around four decades.

Her series colleague from "The Sopranos", Ray Abruzzo, said goodbye to his former colleague on his official Instagram account. He posted a picture of the deceased and wrote: "I'm sad to hear about the death of Suzanne Shepherd." She had an effect on him like "a force of nature". She was also a teacher to him.

The news of Suzanne Shepherd's passing has sparked tributes from the entertainment world. Her impact was felt not just in movies like "Goodfellas" and "The Sopranos," but also on TV shows such as "Law & Order" and "Third Watch."
