Six fatalities occurred during an offensive against a mayoral candidate in southern Mexico.
A candidate for mayor and five other individuals lost their lives during a violent incident in southern Mexico. The Chiapas state prosecutor's office has reported that there was a clash between armed civilians following a political campaign event by 28-year-old Lucero López Maza.
Based on accounts from nearby residents, López Maza - running for mayor in the town of La Concordia - was travelling in a vehicle when she was stopped at a gas station. Police and emergency responders believe that the other victims were a woman, a young girl and three men.
The Presidential and Legislative elections are scheduled to take place in Mexico on June 2, along with numerous other local and regional positions. The Data Cívica non-profit has noted that at least 26 candidates have been murdered since the campaign commenced back in September.
