Singer Mariah Carey expresses grief over the simultaneous passing of her mother and sister.
"I'm bummed out that I lost my mom lately, it happened over the weekend. Sadly, on the same day, my sister passed away too," Mariah Carey shared with CNN on Monday. The specifics about what led to Patricia Carey's and Alison Carey's demises weren't disclosed by the singer. Patricia, trained at Juilliard in opera, was 87 years old. As per a report in the Times Union, Alison, a resident of Coxsackie, New York, was 63 years old.
In her statement, Mariah Carey expressed gratitude for the chance to spend time with her mom before she passed away. She thanks everyone for their love, understanding, and respect for her privacy during this tough time.
Patricia Carey was an opera singer and a vocal coach, who was married to Mariah Carey's father Alfred Roy. They separated when Mariah was three years old, and Roy passed away in 2002.
In her 2020 memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey", Mariah shared her complex relationship with her mother, mentioning it was filled with contradictions and various realities. Despite their ups and downs, Mariah dedicated the book's opening to her mother, writing, "To Pat, my mom, who I genuinely believe did the best she could. I will continue to love you as much as I can."
Mariah is said to have had a strained relationship with her sister Alison Carey, who sued her in 2021 for causing emotional distress due to certain contents in Mariah's memoir. According to the lawsuit filed in New York, Alison claimed that her sister used the book to make her feel embarrassed and humiliated. As per online court records, Mariah never responded to this claim legally.
Besides Alison, Mariah Carey is also a mother to her son, Morgan Carey.
After experiencing a challenging week, Mariah Carey sought solace in watching her favorite entertainment shows to help cope with her grief. Despite their strained relationship, Mariah fondly remembered the time she and her sister Alison used to go to local concerts and musicals for entertainment.
