Vanessa Mai - Singer is an "absolute Christmas fan"

"I've been an absolute Christmas fan for as long as I can remember," admits Vanessa Mai (31): "I fulfill all the Christmas clichés." In addition to Christmas markets, cookie baking and mulled wine, the singer is also involved in social projects. Together with L'Oréal Paris, she is currently supporting DKMS Life with its "look good feel better" program for cancer patients. "I think it's somehow in us to be involved with charitable projects, especially at Christmas time."

What makes the DKMS Life project so special?

Vanessa Mai: DKMS Life really is such an important and great organization - and when my partner L'Oréal Paris told me about the project, I really wanted to be part of it and support the new fundraising campaign. The DKMS Life cosmetics seminars for girls and women with cancer are carried out with so much passion. It's really touching!

What exactly is your commitment here?

Mai: At the end of the year, we did a joint shoot for a campaign with the aim of showing the people who make up DKMS Life and the program and, of course, motivating them to donate. In addition to myself, there are other prominent supporters who are backing the campaign. Of course, there are also a few things happening on social media. So far, I've received totally positive feedback from my community and I'm looking forward to seeing more results.

Are you particularly keen to donate at Christmas?

Mai: I think it's somehow in us to get involved with charitable projects, especially at Christmas time. On the one hand, of course, it's good, but on the other hand, there are also needs for support, donations and the like during the other eleven months of the year. That's why I intend to focus on more than just the Christmas period.

What are you particularly looking forward to in the run-up to Christmas?

Mai: I've been an absolute Christmas fan for as long as I can remember. And I take almost everything with me! Baking cookies, Christmas markets, drinking mulled wine, Christmas sweaters, Wham! and Mariah Carey - have I forgotten any clichés? If so, bring it on - I fulfill them all (laughs)!

Have you already taken care of the Christmas presents?

Mai: Guilty! I'm someone who likes to be early when it comes to this sort of thing. I used to go on a last-minute Christmas shopping spree on December 24th too often - and I don't need to anymore (laughs).

Many couples no longer give each other presents. What's it like for you and your husband?

Mai: Not a chance for us! It's not about anything material, it's the gesture that counts - and for us it's simply important.

How and with whom are you spending Christmas this year?

Mai: Admittedly, the exact plans for the 24th to 26th haven't been finalized yet. But of course we'll be seeing our families, but we'll also be spending time together with our dog Ikaro.

Are there certain traditions that you keep year after year?

Mai: I now take Polaroid pictures of us every Christmas - and they always produce great moments and photos.

Cookies, Christmas goose and lots of chocolate: do you also watch your figure during the holidays?

Mai: No - I'm often disciplined in my life, but I don't let anyone forbid me anything at Christmas (laughs).

Which Christmas treats can you not do without?

Mai: Chocolate in almost all its forms - and speculoos, gingerbread and cinnamon stars...

The Christmas season also marks the start of the final spurt for 2023, how would you personally sum up the year?

Mai: Personally, I'm just grateful that we can live our lives the way we do and that we're healthy. Health is always the most important thing.

What do you want for 2024?

Mai: 2024 will be an exciting year for me musically with new music, a new tour and many other highlights. I'm really looking forward to the fans' reactions. Personally - I'll be completely honest - I just hope that we stay healthy and happy. And for the world and society, that it simply writes better headlines than in 2023 with wars, divided societies and many, many more unpleasant topics.
