On July 26, 2023, Sineád O'Connor passed away at the age of 56. A year later, the cause of her death was revealed. According to the "Irish Independent," citing the death certificate, the singer died from the complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, as well as a mild infection of the lower respiratory tract.

The certificate explicitly stated that O'Connor's death was due to "the worsening of a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, bronchial, together with a mild respiratory infection." The death of the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer was officially registered by her ex-husband, John Reynolds, in Lambeth, London, on July 24, 2023.

O'Connor was found unresponsive in a London residence on July 26, 2023. Her death was announced in the evening, with "The Irish Times" reporting the news first. The family of the deceased singer, who became famous in 1990 with the song "Nothing Compares 2 U," shared their grief in a statement: "With deep sadness, we announce the death of our beloved Sineád." The relatives and friends of the Irish singer asked for privacy.

The death of her son heavily affected her

In January, a spokesperson for the Southwark Coroner's Court announced that O'Connor had died of natural causes, and the investigation into her cause of death was therefore discontinued. O'Connor left behind three children. The suicide of her son Shane, at the age of 17 in 2022, greatly affected her. She canceled performances and sought trauma and addiction treatment.
