Sign for the famous Penny Lane reappears
The Beatles made Penny Lane world famous. After many years, an old street sign from Liverpool has now reappeared, according to the British news agency PA. A former student contacted The Beatles Story Museum anonymously and stated that he wanted to return the street sign, which was stolen in the 1970s. It is now to be put on display.
"It's great to see something of such significance finally returned to its rightful place after almost half a century," Mayor Steve Rotheram told PA. But Penny Lane is so much more than a street.
The true meaning of the song lies not in the street name or the sign, but in the scenes and characters that Paul McCartney remembered from his youth. "The nurse, the banker, the fireman and the hairdresser who brought the street to life - they are the real treasures of Penny Lane."
The Beatles released the song in 1967. It was recorded in their studio in London's Abbey Road, which also became world-famous. Since then, several Penny Lane signs have been stolen in Liverpool, wrote PA. McCartney had also paid a visit to the street when he drove through his home town with presenter James Corden on "Carpool Karaoke" years ago.
Visitors to The Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool will now have the opportunity to see the original Penny Lane street sign, which was anonymously returned by a former student. The Beatles, who made Penny Lane famous with their 1967 song, often drew inspiration from the diverse characters and businesses seen on this iconic street.
