Apartment wanted - Moving stories - Shortly before the wedding, Alex was dumped. Two months later, his ex is pregnant by her new boyfriend

Alexander Benzien, 41, thought he might be a father this year. Everything seemed perfect: he had just bought a house with his fiancée and the wedding was due to take place in August 2022. All the invitations had already been sent out and the suit had been bought.

But then everything changed. Two months before the wedding, his fiancée broke up with him and Alexander had to move out of the house they shared.

A short time later, his successor moved in - and fathered an offspring. The baby was born less than a year after Alexander Benzien moved out, as he found out from a friend.

He is still struggling with it today. As much as he had been looking forward to their future together, the sudden break-up hit him all the harder. With his moving boxes packed, he had to find an apartment on the spur of the moment - and all he got was a place in Lübeck that was too expensive and too big.

85 square meters and three rooms - actually too much for the academic. He has been looking for a smaller apartment since January 2023. Half the size would be enough for him. But he can't find one.

Of the 2,000 euros net he earns, he has to spend 1,100 euros on rent. He says that in good months he can save maybe 300 euros. In bad months, it's just enough to make ends meet. Sometimes he also has to borrow money from his friends. He has been able to save 1000 euros over the last few months. But that still wouldn't be enough for the deposit on a new apartment, so he would have to borrow from friends again.

Alexander Benzien has already had to sell his car and now uses his mother's car for longer journeys. But he can't expect much more support from his two parents. Both fell ill with leukemia at almost the same time recently. This is another reason why he has reduced his working hours.

It can hardly get much worse, he says. A new apartment would at least take one of his worries away.
