Shopper advocacy groups file objections against Chinese e-commerce platform, Temu.
Consumer rights groups from various European nations have lodged a complaint against the Chinese online store Temu. Monique Goyens of BEUC, a prominent European consumer organization, stated on Thursday that the online marketplace contains numerous underhanded tactics designed to entice customers into spending more time and money on the platform. These practices are alleged to breach European Union laws on digital services.
Goyens cited the example of customers being presented with more expensive options after clicking on a specific product. Additionally, users have to navigate a convoluted process to deactivate their Temu account. She also noted that it's frequently unclear on Temu who the product suppliers are; thus, it's uncertain whether said products meet EU safety regulations.
Temu responded by claiming to be taking the complaint "very seriously" and "carefully" examining the issue. The newly established company in the European market, according to a spokesperson, is devoted to accommodating "local customs." The spokesperson continued: "Where we identify areas for improvement, we want to collaborate with stakeholders to enhance our service and rectify any shortcomings."
