stern-DISCUTHEK - Shoot wolves - or ban hunting in Germany altogether? A hunter discusses with a PETA activist
Can it be ecologically sustainable to kill animals? And do hunters even have to shoot certain animals such as wolves in order to protect humans? Peta activist Lisa Kainz and passionate hunter Alena Steinbach engage in a lively and controversial debate on the subject in the latest episode of stern-DISKUTHEK.
Animal rights activist Kainz, for example, is of the opinion that we should not even talk about "hunting" - but rather about "killing". And when it comes to meat consumption, the question is not "what do I eat", but "who do I eat". After all, a living being has to die for meat consumption, which is unnecessary and unethical. The animal rights activist rejects hunting in general and calls for it to be banned in Germany. Many wild animals that are shot are not killed immediately. Shot, injured and with broken bones, this means an agonizing death. And finally, nature does not need hunting. Animal populations regulate themselves if humans leave them alone. This also applies to the wolf.
Huntress warns: the wolf can become a danger
Huntswoman Steinbach takes a completely different view. In her view, hunters fulfill an important function - they regulate the animal population in a certain area and shoot sick and weak animals. In her view, the wolf can become a danger to other animals if it multiplies too much. Regulation of the wolf population by hunters is indispensable.
The hobby hunter argues that wolves are a major problem for shepherds and other farmers. Not even high electric fences keep the wolf from going into a "bloodlust" and killing livestock. The experiences of recent years have clearly shown this. "I can very much understand the farmers and I also think it is really dangerous - also in relation to humans," said Steinbach on the subject of wolves.

In the debate, hunter Alena Steinbach argued that she and other hunters play a crucial role in regulating animal populations, including the wolf, to prevent them from becoming a threat to other animals or humans. This mentality is shared by many farmers who have suffered losses due to wolf attacks on their livestock. Despite the controversy surrounding the hunting of wolves, passionate hunter Lisa Kainz, a PETA activist, holds a completely opposite view, advocating for the ban of hunting in Germany due to the potential for prolonged suffering and unnecessary loss of life. German politicians and the public are now grappling with the question of whether to continue allowing wolf hunts or to protect these animals completely.
