Susan Sarandon - She apologizes for statements about Jews
The US actress and Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (77) has publicly apologized for her massively criticized statements on the war between Hamas and Israel. On Friday, Sarandon published a lengthy statement on her official Instagram account. She had recently taken part in a rally together with a group of activists to draw attention to the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza and call for a ceasefire. However, she had not planned to give a speech there. She was spontaneously persuaded to do so.
"In an effort to express my concern about the rise in hate crimes, I said that Jewish Americans, who are targets of increasing anti-Semitic hatred, 'get a taste of what it's like to be Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence'," Sarandon writes there. This formulation was a "terrible mistake", because her choice of words implies that Jews have so far been spared persecution: "The opposite is the case. As we all know, Jews have been familiar with centuries of oppression and genocide in Europe [...] with discrimination and religious violence that continues to this day." She deeply regrets that she played down the reality and hurt people.
Susan Sarandon announced that she would continue to stand up for her goals
She will continue to work for "peace, truth, justice and compassion for all people" and hopes that people can meet with "love and a willingness to engage in dialog". Susan Sarandon took part in a pro-Palestinian rally in Union Square in New York City on November 17. However, it was not only her choice of words during her speech that was heavily criticized. According to US media reports, she also joined in with the anti-Semitic slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free", which questions Israel's right to exist. Sarandon does not address this accusation in her statement.
Her artist agency, the United Talent Agency, then pulled the ripcord without further ado and threw Sarandon out. As reported by the "Los Angeles Times", the UTA did not want to comment on the exact reasons. Sarandon also uses her Twitter account for her agenda. Among other things, she shared a performance by former "Pink Floyd" musician Roger Waters (80), as he sings in front of huge screens showing, among other things, "Stop the genocide". Waters has been criticized for years for anti-Semitic statements and actions. Among other things, the Berlin police investigated him after a concert at which he performed in a leather coat with a red armband. According to a police spokesperson, the parallels to the SS uniform gave rise to the initial suspicion of incitement to hatred.
