Shakira pays much more fine
Shakira apparently has more problems with the Spanish justice system than previously known. The singer, who has only just reached an expensive settlement with the court, already paid millions in another tax case in the summer.
A few days after a tax fraud case against her was dropped, it became known that Shakira had paid 6.6 million euros in another case. The pop singer had already transferred this sum to the competent court in Barcelona in August, the Colombian singer's agency explained, confirming a report in the daily newspaper "El Periódico".
It was only on Monday that a court in Barcelona announced, following an agreement with the public prosecutor's office, that the 46-year-old had pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a fine. Specifically, the trial concerned the period from 2012 to 2014, in which Shakira was sentenced to three years' probation and a fine of more than 7.3 million euros.
In the summer, the Spanish public prosecutor's office also initiated further criminal proceedings against Shakira. The prosecution accuses her of evading taxes amounting to around 6.6 million euros in 2018. The payment of 6.6 million euros in this case says nothing about the singer's alleged guilt or innocence, according to the newspaper report by "El Periódico". The singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, had rather demonstrated her willingness to "repay her possible debts to the Spanish tax authorities".
Living in Spain, taxes in the Bahamas
In the trial, which was discontinued on Monday, the public prosecutor's office accused Shakira of providing false information about her place of residence and thus defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of almost 14.5 million euros. According to the prosecution, the Colombian had moved to Spain shortly after her relationship with the then FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué became public in 2011. However, she declared her tax residence in the Bahamas until 2015.
Shakira has been suspected of tax evasion for years. In connection with her residence in the Bahamas, her name appeared in the "Pandora Papers" in 2021, which revealed the tax avoidance tricks of many multi-millionaires, some of them prominent. Following her separation from Piqué, which became public last year, Shakira now lives with her sons Milan and Sasha in the US metropolis of Miami.
- Despite paying a hefty fine for a previous tax fraud case in Spain, Shakira still faced additional charges of tax evasion, allegedly involving 6.6 million euros in 2018.
- Shakira's residence status in Spain and the Bahamas has been a subject of controversy, with accusations of tax evasion due to providing false information, potentially defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of millions.
- The entertainer Shakira, currently residing in Miami, has been involved in multiple tax disputes with Spanish justice, including criminal proceedings related to tax fraud and evasion.
