Dark storm clouds hang over the landscape in Penzberg in Upper Bavaria. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of thunderstorms in large parts of southern Germany.

The German Meteorological Service Issues a Statement - Severe rainfalls in the southeast could lead to flooding.

In the coming days, weather forecasts are getting more detailed: The southeastern region of the country is likely to see significant rainfall during the weekend. The German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach predicts continuous rainfall from Friday night till Sunday.

The regions most prone to excessive rain are the Erzgebirge, the Thuringian Forest, Franconia, Swabia, and Allgäu. DWD meteorologist Nico Bauer estimates rainfall accumulation of approximately 100 liters per square meter in these parts within 48 hours.

The areas from Allgäu to Mittelfranken could experience extremely heavy rainfall, even up to 150 liters per square meter. The DWD plans to release concrete weather warnings on Thursday.

With such high rainfall, flooding is imminent. Bauer stated, "Given the numerous rainfall incidents in the past few weeks in the southern and southwestern regions of the country, the soils are already saturated." Rivers could rise swiftly due to these rainfalls.

The heavy rain scenario is expected to subside on Sunday, with rainfall shifting southwards, towards the southeast. According to Bauer, the rain will have stopped in the regions south of the Danube by Sunday night.

Fortunately, the weather conditions in other regions of the country are much milder: Friday will be sunny and dry from the Baltic Sea to Lusatia. On Saturday, there will be a mix of sun, clouds, and occasional showers in most areas. The sun will shine for longer periods along the coasts up to the Altmark and Uckermark, and it will remain mostly dry.
