Several earthquakes hit the southern Italian region around Naples.
The Italian city of Naples and its surrounding region have experienced some of the most powerful earthquakes in 40 years. Over a 12-hour period between Monday evening and early Tuesday morning, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) recorded approximately 150 tremors in the Phlegraean Fields, a large active volcanic area located west of Mount Vesuvius.
Officials noted that no significant destruction was initially reported, but people in the affected regions became terrified. According to the INGV, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred on Monday evening at a depth of 2.5 kilometers. This was preceded by smaller tremors with a magnitude of 3.5, followed by many aftershocks. Mauro Di Vito from the INGV stated that these were the most powerful earthquakes to occur in four decades. The institute warned that even more earthquakes of similar strength could take place.
Emergency responders in the area observed cracks in buildings and fallen items. An amateur video shared from Pozzuoli demonstrated bottles falling from shelves and rolling across the floor in a grocery store as a result of the shaking. The schools in Pozzuoli remained closed on Tuesday. Mayor Luigi Manzoni uploaded to Facebook about emergency shelters being made available for anxious citizens.
The Phlegraean Fields stretch between the southern Italian cities of Pozzuoli and Naples. In recent times, growing volcanic activity caused by gases released from the magma has raised concerns among locals. Despite this, experts assume that a volcanic eruption is rather unlikely in the near future.

The active volcanic region near Naples, known as the Phlegraean Fields, has seen numerous earthquakes in recent times, including a 4.4-magnitude tremor. Due to the region's volcanic activity and the series of earthquakes, many people have expressed fear and anxiety. If the volcanic activity continues, experts warn that more earthquakes of similar strength could occur.
