- Self-Reflection After Losing His Sons
Singer Nick Cave (66) has experienced not only grief but also a change in perspective with the death of his sons Arthur (2000-2015) and Jethro (1991-2022). In an interview with "ABC News", he spoke about turning away from his "shameful form of self-obsession" after this loss and putting his family above his role as a musician. The Australian has already lost two of his four children in his life.
"I am a father, a husband, a grandfather"
Before the tragic events, Cave admired his own genius and was self-focused. As he described it, the sudden deaths showed him "the folly" of his arrogance. "I am a father, a husband, a grandfather and some kind of world citizen. These things are much more important to me than the concept of being an artist," explained the "Into My Arms" interpreter. His career as a musician and author is still important to him, but he has parted ways with the "idea that art transcends everything."
Some time after the loss of his 15-year-old son Arthur, Cave felt drawn to religion. The songwriter found a believer's life "very helpful." In the conversation, he also revealed that it fills him with "eternal awe" how his wife Susie Cave (57) returned to life after the tragedy. After Arthur's death, the fashion designer was "bedridden, in a darkened room, in her own grave." She emerged from it symbolically and resumed work. Cave described her as "an enormous source of inspiration."
Singer became a grandfather for the first time
In May, Cave shared a joyful experience on his website "Red Hand Files": His son Luke (33) and his wife Sasha made him a grandfather with the birth of their son Roman. Besides Luke, Nick Cave is the father of another son, Earl (24). He and his late twin brother Arthur were born to his wife Susie Cave. Luke Cave, on the other hand, is from Cave's previous marriage to the Brazilian Viviane Carneiro.
The frontman of the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds lost his son Arthur in 2015 when he fell from a cliff. Seven years later, he mourned the death of Jethro Cave. The cause of death of the 31-year-old, who worked as a model and actor, is unknown.
After the loss of his sons, Nick Cave reevaluated his priorities and realized that being a father, a husband, and a grandfather are more meaningful to him than his art. With the birth of his grandson Roman, Nick Cave became a grandfather for the first time through his son Luke's marriage.
