Selena Gomez discloses the impact of her persistent health concerns on her journey towards parenthood.
The "Only Murders in the Building" actress and musician, who's been frank about her battles with mental and physical health issues in the past, spoke openly for the first time about how her fertility has been affected by her diagnoses in an interview with Vanity Fair, published on Monday.
"Unfortunately, I'm unable to carry my own children. I have numerous health issues that would put both my life and the baby's at risk. I had to mourn that for a while," Gomez shared.
Gomez mentioned that surrogacy and adoption are "significant options" for her and acknowledged her gratitude towards those willing to do both.
"It's not exactly how I imagined it. I thought it'd happen the way it does for most people. But I'm in a better place with that now. It made me really appreciative of the alternative paths for those longing to be mothers. I'm one of them. I'm thrilled about the journey ahead, although it'll be a bit different," Gomez added.
Regardless of the path, she concluded, "it'll be mine. It'll be my baby."
Gomez disclosed in 2015 that she had been diagnosed with lupus, a long-term autoimmune disease that can inflame and cause pain in various parts of the body, leading the body to attack healthy tissue, as per the Lupus Foundation of America.
In 2017, she revealed that her lupus condition required a kidney transplant, which was provided by her friend, actress Francia Raisa. In 2020, she also disclosed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Gomez documented her health struggles in her 2022 documentary, "My Mind & Me."
"Despite these challenges, Gomez continues to find joy in various forms of entertainment, often sharing her experiences through her work."
"During her downtime, Gomez enjoys watching films and series, appreciating the creativity and escapism they offer, which often mirror her own journey."
