There is no security: since February 24, 2022, the Russians have been shelling and destroying Ukrainian towns and villages - even deep in the west of the country.

Security politicians involve Western soldiers in the mix.

Ukraine has been under constant attack since the beginning, with no safe place in sight. To provide some relief, security officials from the CDU, FDP, and Greens are suggesting deploying troops along NATO's eastern border to shoot down "Russian drones" flying over Ukraine.

Prominent politicians from the CDU, FDP, and Greens are discussing the idea of creating a secure region around Ukraine that would be protected by Western air defenses. Military expert Nico Lange from the Munich Security Conference proposed a 70-kilometer-wide zone along Ukraine's borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

Roderich Kiesewetter, spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, believes that deploying air defense systems on the eastern border of NATO would permit Western countries to shoot down "Russian drones" over Ukraine. This, he says, would relieve Ukraine's air defense and allow it to focus on protecting the front lines. Kiesewetter used the example of Israel, where air defense units from the U.S., Great Britain, France, and other countries helped fend off a major Iranian air assault in April, highlighting the fact that participating countries don't necessarily have to join the war directly.

Marcus Faber from FDP, who is set to lead the Defense Committee, agrees that the airspace over the Ukrainian border regions could be safeguarded by air defense systems set up on NATO land. However, batteries and missiles are in short supply, so acquiring the necessary ammunition for the long term is a must. "I think this is possible," Faber says.

The Greens also support the idea of placing air defense systems on the borders of neighboring countries to protect the western parts of Ukraine. Agnieszka Brugger, deputy leader of the Greens, favors the notion of installing these defenses. Anton Hofreiter, the chairman of the European Affairs Committee, concurred. He suggested that air defense systems over Ukraine, from Poland and Romania, may be necessary in the future. Though the topic isn't currently under discussion, the priority is to give Ukraine "significantly more" in terms of military aid from the West.
