Scholz does not experience Hamburg's poor weather conditions.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been residing in Potsdam, which is the capital of Brandenburg, for quite a few years now. Yet, his sentiments still lie with the bustling Hanseatic city of Hamburg. When the nostalgia gets overwhelming, it takes him right back to the Elbe, as he explains in an interview.
The current Federal Chancellor admits to missing the harsh weather of Hamburg when he's working in Berlin or at his residence in Potsdam. "I miss the Elbe, the harbor, and rowing on the Alster. Even the rainy weather occasionally," he says to Zeit magazine. However, he makes sure not to dwell too much on his yearnings, because he still has a home and numerous friends in Hamburg.
Scholz was born in Osnabrück, but spent a significant period of his life in Hamburg. From 2001 to a short while, he served as Senator of the Interior in the city. From 2011 to 2018, he acted as its First Mayor. Also, for several years during this era, he presided over the SPD state association as their leader. Prior to this, he served as the head of a district association in Hamburg. He also practiced law in the city.
