The attempted assassination of US Presidential candidate Donald Trump (78) in Butler, Pennsylvania, in the United States, is causing high waves and leaving German top politicians unmoved. Trump, who was hit by a bullet in the ear, survived the incident and has since been able to leave the hospital after initial treatment. The Secret Service confirmed that the assassin was killed. A visitor to the campaign event also lost their life.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (66, SPD) spoke out early on Sunday morning on his official X account and condemned the act in strong terms, both in German and English. The SPD politician described the attack as "abhorrent." Trump's health is also in Scholz's thoughts: "My thoughts are also with the people affected by this attack. Such acts of violence threaten democracy."

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (43, Greens) also spoke out immediately on X. In two posts, she expressed deep shock over the news of the attack on Trump: "Violence should never be a means of political dispute - no matter what the reason." Elections in democracies are decided by ballots, not weapons. Her thoughts are with the victims of the attack: "I wish Donald Trump and the other injured a quick recovery."

Ursula von der Leyen expresses her shock

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (65, CDU) also expressed her shock via X. She too was "deeply shocked."

"I wish Donald Trump a quick recovery and express my condolences to the family of the innocent victim," the CDU politician stated. Political violence has no place in a Democracy, as von der Leyen further emphasized.
