'Saturday Night Live' overlord Lorne Michaels unveils the program's satire strategies for the approaching political election

Lorne Michaels, the mastermind behind the long-running sketch show, stated that the 50th anniversary season won't deviate from the norm. He sees the pre-election period in November as a perfect time to bring back some cherished former cast members to Studio 8H.

During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter published on Thursday, Michaels expressed his desire to honor this season with the return of cast members who hold a deep affection for the show, not necessarily as hosts, but just for make-appearances. He mentioned that this election period, with its five to six shows, would provide an excellent opportunity for this.

Michaels confirmed that Maya Rudolph will reprise her role as Vice President Kamala Harris. He also revealed that Steve Martin will feature in this season, although he clarified that Martin won't portray Tim Walz, Harris' running mate, despite popular demand online.

Regarding who might play former President Donald Trump, Michaels was ambiguous about Alec Baldwin's potential return as the Trump impressionist, but hinted that James Austin Johnson, who has also essayed the role, would be a part of the show in some capacity.

Michaels mused, "Trump has evolved." He added, "We'll have to reshape it again because, well, you saw the debate. The charm of show business lies in the fact that you can't return with the same show. So, all these characters need to be re-evaluated."

Michaels concluded by saying, "We've got the actors to portray them, and it should be entertaining." He added, "You can't lecture the audience, which is the crux of modern politics. Our style of political satire is more like, 'Yeah, there are a few idiots on both sides.'"

"SNL" is all set to commence its 50th season on September 28 on NBC. "Hacks" star Jean Smart will host, and Jelly Roll will serve as the musical guest.

Michaels believes that the pre-election period will make the 50th season of "SNL" more entertaining, as it would offer an ideal opportunity to bring back beloved former cast members for make-appearances. The show's style of political satire is about presenting a few idiots from both sides in an entertaining manner, avoiding lecturing the audience.
