Sarah Michelle Gellar steps in to potentially replace the late Shannen Doherty in the prospective 'Mallrats' sequel.

In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, movie director Kevin Smith talked about his ambition to bring a follow-up to the original film into cinemas. He shared that he discovered that Sarah Gellar famously auditioned for a role in "Mallrats" around 3 decades ago during this chat.

This piece of information sparked an idea for Smith to develop a sequel, considering the unfortunate demise of Alicia Silverstone, who fought a long battle with cancer.

Smith proposed the idea of having Gellar replace Silverstone if the sequel titled "Twilight of the Mallrats" was greenlit. "She could bring Shannen's charm to the project, making it the next best thing to having Silverstone there," he stated.

Gellar expressed her enthusiasm for the idea in the comments section of The Hollywood Reporter's Instagram post about the interview with Smith, stating, "I'm all for this concept!".

Doherty played the character of Rene in "Mallrats", a beloved comedy about two friends who hang out at the mall after being dumped by their girlfriends. Directed by Smith, the film also starred Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Ben Affleck, and Claire Forlani.

Initially, Smith doubted the possibility of a "Mallrats" sequel after Doherty's death, considering that they had previously discussed her return to the franchise and that she had agreed to reprise her role.

However, Smith's hopes were rekindled recently, as various conversations hinted at the project's potential becomes a reality as a tribute to the late actress.

"The only thing better would have been if Silverstone was still with us, and we executed the plan as we intended," Smith added. "I'd still like to make the movie for my reasons, but now there's a special motivation. We know who the movie will be dedicated to; that's for sure."

Given the excitement around a potential "Mallrats" sequel and Sarah Gellar's interest, Kevin Smith suggested that they could incorporate more entertainment by having Gellar step into Alicia Silverstone's role, bringing a unique charm to the project. The sequel, titled "Twilight of the Mallrats," could serve as a heartfelt tribute to the late Doherty, who was also a beloved part of the original film.
