Sarah Ferguson remembers the late Diana

In August 1997, Princess Diana passed away in a car accident. Today, she would have been 63 years old. On Instagram, her former daughter-in-law Sarah Ferguson reminisces about her "dearest friend."

"Happy birthday wishes to my dearest friend Diana." With these words, Sarah Ferguson begins an Instagram post. The former daughter-in-law of the late Princess Diana (1961-1997) addresses these moving words directly to the mother of Princes William and Harry.

"You were a pillar of light and love. And what a legacy you left behind," writes Ferguson under an old photo of the two of them looking up at the sky. "I will always remember our laughter and the kind, loving spirit I found in you. I am sure that you are always with us. Rest in peace, my friend." In 1997, Princess Diana died following a car accident in Paris.

Ferguson was married to Prince Andrew, the brother of King Charles, while Diana married the current Monarch of Britain. In 2021, Andrew's ex-wife told "People" magazine that Diana and she had been best friends since their youth. Diana had introduced Ferguson to her later husband Andrew, but they divorced in 1996 after around ten years of marriage. In 2019, Andrew stepped down from his public duties as a Royal following the revelation of his connection to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (1953-2019).

Three years ago, on the 1st of July, Harry and William unveiled a statue in honor of their late mother. Harry had traveled from the US for the occasion. The relationship between the brothers was reportedly tense at the time, but for the cameras, they presented a united front.

In a joint statement from the brothers, they said: "Today, on what would have been our Mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, her strength, and her character. These qualities she instilled in us and, through our foundation, we will continue to honor her legacy." These qualities had made a positive impact on the world and touched countless lives. "We wish she were still with us."

"Despite living in different circumstances as part of the British Royal Family, Diana Princess of Wales and Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew, shared a deep friendship that spanned decades."

"Great Britain's monarchy, with Prince Charles as the current Monarch, continues to honor the legacy of Diana Princess of Wales, who sadly passed away in 1997, through various tributes and initiatives, such as the statue dedicated by her sons, Princes William and Harry."
