One of the most important film awards this year goes to German actress Sandra Hüller. She wins the European Film Award for her portrayal of a writer suspected of murder. During her acceptance speech, she initiates seconds of silence for peace in the world.
German actress Sandra Hüller has won the European Film Award for Best Actress. This was announced by the European Film Academy in Berlin. The 45-year-old received the award for her role in the legal thriller "Anatomy of a Case". In it, she plays a successful writer under suspicion of murder. In her acceptance speech, Hüller, who lives in Leipzig, called on the audience to take a moment of silence for peace in the world. The auditorium fell silent.
German actress Leonie Benesch ("Das Lehrerzimmer") and Finnish actress Alma Pöysti ("Fallende Blätter") were also in the running for the award. Hüller was nominated twice in the best actress category this year, in addition to "Anatomy of a Case" for the drama "The Zone of Interest" about the family of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss.
Prestigious industry award
The actress, who was born in Suhl in Thuringia, had already won the trophy for best actress for the tragicomedy "Toni Erdmann" in 2016. Critics give her good chances for the big film award season in the USA - for the Oscar, for example. And the industry magazine "The Hollywood Reporter" posed the question at the beginning of September: "Sandra Hüller, Actress of the Year?"
The European Film Awards are considered one of the most prestigious awards in the industry. The approximately 4600 members of the European Film Academy were able to vote for the winners in a number of categories, similar to the Oscars in the USA.
