Ukraine can now theoretically use US Patriot air defense systems to shoot down aircraft on Russian territory - and thus protect the city of Kharkiv.

Russia vows "unconventional" retaliation

The US granting permission to Ukraine to utilize weapons given by the Washington administration against Russian land has triggered a heated response from Moscow. There are threats of "asymmetric" reactions. A recent warning mentioned Putin's "secret cards."

In response to the US's decision allowing strikes on Russian territory, Andrei Kartapolov, the Defense Committee chairman of the State Duma, remarked in a statement via RIA Novosti: "This won't alter the direction of our special operation in any way." Concurrently, he added that the US would provoke escalation. "We will respond. Asymmetrically, but painfully."

Kartapolov didn't provide additional details. Retired Colonel and military expert Ralph Thiele cautioned on ntv against underestimating Putin. "Putin has hidden assets. He's far superior in hi-tech domains, drones, and even in space than we assumed. Consequently, he remains a dangerous player."

Following the US approval, Germany also declared its support for attacks on Russian soil to defend Kharkiv. "It's about the emancipation of Ukrainian territory, and we've agreed with Ukraine that the weapons we provide will be utilized legally," said government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit in a press statement.

Ukrainian President Zelensky shared his thoughts with the Guardian, stating that the delays in Biden's utilization of Western weapons against targets in Russia have enticed Kremlin forces to harass Ukraine and relentlessly pursue the Ukrainian people. According to Zelensky, the delays at the White House have resulted in casualties.

"I find it completely illogical that we have these weapons and the murderers, the terrorists who kill us, are on the Russian side," said Zelensky. "It's like a hunt. Hunting for people. They know we can see them, but we can't touch them."
