Russia nightly bombards Ukraine with air attacks.
During the night, sirens blare across Ukraine as air defense alarms sound. The Russian air force is targeting the western regions of the country. CDU politician Kiesewetter proposes that Western states should take control of air defense in the west.
The Russian military has bombarded Ukraine with rockets, cruise missiles, and drones, reports Kiev's military officials. Hypersonic Kinzhal missiles were utilized, as per the Ukrainian Air Force's Telegram channel. The targeted areas were mostly in the western regions of the country, including the Chmelnytskyi region, which houses a significant Ukrainian air base, Starokostiantyniv. In the Vinnytsia region, the municipality declared a residential building was struck. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi also shared news of attacks on the city via Telegram. No damage assessment nor news of casualties was available at the time. Explosions were also heard near the capital Kiev, reported public broadcaster Suspilne. As usual on air defense alerts, many people in Kiev sought refuge in the subway and other shelters.
The intense nighttime aerial bombardment coincided with the launch of strategic bomber aircraft Tu-95 in Russia. From these aircraft, cruise missiles were fired. Later, MiG-31 fighters took flight, which are the carriers of the Kinzhal.
On Saturday, two Russian glide bombs struck a massive supermarket in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. A minimum of six people were killed and numerous others injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested additional air defense systems for his nation in the evening. "If Ukraine had sufficient air defense systems and modern combat aircraft, these attacks would be infeasible."
In contrast, CDU politician Roderich Kiesewetter suggested that Western states should assume responsibility for air defense in the western Ukraine. "A coalition of the willing could widen its air defense in a 70 to 100-kilometer corridor on the western territory of Ukraine," said Kiesewetter to the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung." "This would relieve the Ukrainian forces in this area - they could then focus on air defense in the eastern regions of the country."

In light of these relentless attacks, Ukrainian officials are urging for more air defense systems, believing that with adequate resources, such assaults could be prevented. Meanwhile, German CDU politician Roderich Kiesewetter proposes a joint effort by Western states to manage air defense in western Ukraine, potentially alleviating pressure from local forces and allowing them to focus on eastern regions.
